Nagasaki Settlement Festival (ナガサキキョリュウチマツリ)

A festival reminiscent of the pride and prosperity of Nagasaki during the settlement period

  • 3064views

A variety of events will be held in the Higashiyamate, Minamiyamate, and Oura areas, the former foreign settlement areas of Nagasaki City.
In the past, Nagasaki was Japan's only window to the West, and served as a base for transmitting a variety of information.

Many people settled in the city, learning medicine, Dutch studies, military science, etc., and became the driving force behind the dawn of Japan.

After the national isolation was lifted, Nagasaki became a prosperous settlement for foreigners, especially Europeans, in the Higashiyamate, Minamiyamate, and Oura areas at the same time as Yokohama and Kobe.

This festival was started in 2001 by the citizens and the government in an effort to reconsider the people who lived in the settlement at the end of the Edo period, the historical role of Nagasaki that contributed greatly to the dawn of Japan, and the pride in one's hometown.

The most important feature of the festival is that people who are living in the present while creating history play a leading role, and anyone can easily participate in the festival.
