Fruit-Shaped Bus Stops

Fruit-Shaped Bus Stops-1
In the small town of Konagai, which is about 10 miles from the center of Isahaya City, there are 16 bus stops running along Highway 207. The bus stops are not your ordinary ones, but fruit shaped ones!

The idea of fruit-shaped bus stops was said to be inspired by the pumpkin-shaped carriage in Cinderella, and they were installed by the town of Konagai in 1990 to welcome visitors to the Journey Exposition Nagasaki 1990.

Today, there are 5 kinds of fruit-shaped bus stops; strawberry, watermelon, cantaloupe, orange and tomato. The area of the highway is now referred to as “Tokimeki Fruits Basutei Dori”, or “Tokimeki Fruit-shaped Bus Stop Avenue”.

Oura Cathedral / La cathédrale d’Oura

Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region / Les Sites chrétiens cachés de la région de Nagasaki
Oura Cathedral / La cathédrale d’Oura-1

Oura Cathedral is one of the components that demonstrates what triggered the end of Hidden Christians’ hiding. Hidden Christians met the missionaries for the first time in two centuries (the ‘Discovery of Hidden Christians’). Hidden Christian leaders throughout the Nagasaki region visited the cathedral, and such contact with the missionaries brought about the transition and subsequent end of Hidden Christians’ hiding. In the transitional phase, Hidden Christian communities split into three groups: those who rejoined the Catholic Church, those who decided to continue their unique way of practising the faith that they had developed during the ban on Christianity, and those who converted to Buddhism or Shinto.

Glover Garden

Glover Garden-1
Glover Garden is situated on the southern slope of a mountain, ensuring that the garden's flowers can be enjoyed in full bloom throughout the year. This excellent vantage point offers a superb and extensive view of Nagasaki Harbor. The gardens feature the former Glover Residence, which, in addition to the gardens, was donated to the city of Nagasaki in 1957 by the Nagasaki Shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and opened to the public. Eventually, six other Western-style residences from the Meiji era that had been built throughout the city were dismantled, moved, reconstructed and restored as important national cultural properties on this site of former foreign settlements. They joined the former Glover Residence, the former Ringer Residence, and the former Alt Residence on the site. All these buildings now form Glover Garden.

Inside the gardens, one can tour the Thomas B. Glover Residence, Japan's oldest wooden Western-style residence. Through his trading businesses, Glover contributed much to Japan's modernization. The gardens, in addition to revealing the living circumstances of Nagasaki's foreign residents during what is known as "the period of foreign settlement," also display an abundance of fascinating natural beauty. Now all can view the same scenery, and relax in the same gentle breezes, enjoyed by these renowned historical personages.

Megane-Bashi (Spectacles Bridge)

Megane-Bashi (Spectacles Bridge)-1
In 1570, during the period of national isolation when Dejima was established upon the opening of the Port of Nagasaki, the Nakajima River's importance to trade made it the central artery of the city. In 1634, Japan's first Chinese-style stone bridge, the Spectacle Bridge, was constructed by Mokusunyoujo, the second-generation Chinese monk of Kofukuji Temple, Japan's oldest Chinese Temple. The bridge gets its name from its resemblance to a pair of spectacles when the arches of the bridges are reflected as ovals on the surface of the river. This bridge, along with Edo's Nihonbashi Bridge and Iwakuni's Kintaikyou Bridge, are considered the three most famous bridges in Japan. Although it is not well known, Spectacles Bridge was the inspiration for the Double Bridge of the Imperial Palace. By the end of the 17th century, following the construction of the Spectacles Bridge, numerous stone bridges were built for many of the roads that join the Nakashima River. It is said that these stone bridges were only constructed on roads that lead to temples when one stands at Teramachi.

Peace Park

A place of prayers for world peace and the souls of the atomic bomb victims
Peace Park-1
Nagasaki Peace Park is built on a low hill to the north of the hypocenter of the atomic bomb blast. It was created to represent the wish for world peace and a vow that such a tragic war would never be repeated. The park features the 9.7-meter-high Peace Statue symbolizing the Nagasaki citizens' wish for peace. Sculptor Seibou Kitamura, a Nagasaki native, created this statue as a symbol of the divine love and mercy of Buddha. The raised right hand points to the heavens to signify the threat of atomic weapons while the left arm is raised horizontally to represent the wish for peace. The figure's eyes are lightly closed in prayer for the souls of the atomic bomb victims. Every year on August 9, the anniversary of the atomic bombing, a peace memorial ceremony is conducted in front of this statue and a peace declaration is made to the people of the world. The park also features the Fountain of Peace, which was built in remembrance of a little girl who wandered in search of water. Visitors can also view a row of monuments contributed by various nations that form the zone of symbols of world peace.

Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum

Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum-1
On August 9, 1945, at 11:02 a.m. - three days after the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima - the second atomic bomb was dropped over the Urakami district of Nagasaki. This bomb killed or injured 150,000 people.

Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum covers the history of this event in the accessible form of a story. It begins with the disastrous scene of the attack and includes the events leading up to the dropping of the atomic bomb, the reconstruction of Nagasaki up to the present day, the history of nuclear weapons development, and the hope for a peaceful world free of nuclear weapons.

Comparing the scenes of Nagasaki immediately after the bombing with the appearance of the city today, one cannot help but be impressed by the remarkable spirit of survival and the immutable strength of the people of Nagasaki.

Shitsu Village in Sotome / Village de Shitsu à Sotome

Shitsu Village in Sotome / Village de Shitsu à Sotome-1

Shitsu Village in Sotome is one of the four components that are representative villages demonstrating what the Hidden Christians venerated to continue their secret faith. Hidden Christians in Shitsu concealed and continued their religious faith by secretly venerating icons and conducting their religious practices based on the Catholic liturgical calendar and the Christian catechism. Amid the ban on Christianity, many Hidden Christians in Sotome migrated to remote islands, including the Goto Islands, aiding the spread of Hidden Christian communities in such islands. After the lifting of the ban, the Hidden Christians in Shitsu gradually rejoined the Catholic Church and built a new church on a hill overlooking the village, which marks the end of their hiding.

Ono Village in Sotome / Village d’Ono à Sotome-1

Ono Village in Sotome is one of the four components that are representative villages demonstrating what the Hidden Christians venerated to continue their secret faith. Hidden Christians in Ono Village outwardly behaved as Buddhists and Shinto followers, and prayed to their own deities secretly enshrined in Shinto shrines of the village. In such ways, they camouflaged their inner faith as Buddhism or Shinto. Amid the ban on Christianity, many Hidden Christians in Sotome migrated to remote islands, including the Goto Islands, aiding the spread of Hidden Christian communities in such islands. The Hidden Christians in Ono rejoined the Catholic Church after the lifting of the ban on Christianity, and walked to Shitsu Church to attend church services. They eventually built Ono Church in the centre of their own village, marking the end of the Hidden Christians’ hiding.

Endo Shusaku Literary Museum

The story of the Christians through the eyes of a master of literature
Endo Shusaku Literary Museum-1

The sea, which is the symbolic home of Japan's Christians, was the setting for Shusaku Endo's representative novel, Silence. Mr. Endo himself also favored the scenery of the open sea. As a result, this literature museum was established in May 2000, with the cooperation of Mr. Endo's widow, on a rise that commands a view of the calm Sea of Sumonada. It contains more than 25,000 exhibits as well as the traces of Mr. Endo's life. It also displays items connected to Mr. Endo's literature. Born in Tokyo in 1923, Endo Shusaku was baptized as a Catholic at the age of 11. As an adult, he pursued the question of Japan's spiritual climate and Christianity. He was an author who, throughout his lifetime, used the approach of literature to investigate the issue of religion in depth. The exhibition room features some of Mr. Endo's precious possessions - such as his original manuscripts and stationery - as well as his work desk. His main novels are Silence and The Life of Jesus.

Shianbashi

An entertainment district showcasing Nagasaki, both now and in the past
Shianbashi-1

Shianbashi is Nagasaki's best bar and restaurant district, and every day it is bustling with people, while stores covering a wide variety of genres add color to the night. Located in the center of Nagasaki City, the Shianbashi area has excellent access to transportation options.
Shianbashi was once a bridge that connected to the entrance of the Maruyama district, an entertainment district where geisha and oiran courtesans lived in the 1600s. The name "Shianbashi," or "Deliberation Bridge," comes from the fact that this is where people considered whether to go to the entertainment district or turn back.
In modern times the river has been reclaimed so the bridge is gone, but there are still remnants of the railings on the sides of the road that has been maintained.
