This is a keyhole-shaped* kofun (tumulus) on Iki Island in the Genkai Nada Sea. It is a vast grave: 91 m long, with a 43 m diameter (the round part), and 10 m high, built on land 100 meters above sea level. Gilt bronze horse harnesses and Silla earthenware from the Korean Peninsula have been excavated here, so it is thought that this was the grave of a powerful person who was involved in trade with the Asian continent in the 6th century.
*A unique Japanese grave shape: a circle and rectangle are connected, creating a characteristic shape like a keyhole. It is thought that these graves belonged to people of the highest social status.
