Located around five minutes’ walk from Nagasaki Station, this beautiful white-walled church stands in the city streets and is characterized by its white spire, visible even from the low points between buildings. A French lady contributed a large amount of money toward its construction; it was completed on September 8, 1897, the celebration day of the Birth of the Virgin Mary, and a consecration ceremony took place. The church was damaged by the atomic bombing on August 9, 1945, but the surviving outer walls and spire were used, unaltered, to rebuild, and still remain today. Inside, the church displays a “Smiling Christ” on the front of the alter and also houses a statue of the Virgin Mary. The stained glass windows depicting inlaid camellia flowers are also a highlight.
