Sakamoto International Cemetery (さかもとこくさいぼち)

An international cemetery where Thomas Glover is buried

  • 9716views

This is one of the three large international cemeteries in Nagasaki City, and is the newest international cemetery in Nagasaki. This cemetery, covered in greenery, is the resting place of people from many different countries who lived in Nagasaki for a long time. The gravestone designs are all different, and give the cemetery a sense of the exotic not visible in Japanese cemeteries.
The new Sakamoto International Cemetery, created on a slight hill and divided by a roadway, contains the graves of Thomas Glover, the Scottish merchant who brought new technologies (including steam engines) to Japan and who left his great footprints in Japan’s modern industries, and his family.
