This was the residence of the former feudal lord who governed the Kojiro Kuji area of Unzen City. At the front stands an elegant nagaya-mon gate, with imposing stone walls still stretching around 30 meters on either side. See the residence’s entirely Japanese-style buildings, unchanged from the past, and a Japanese garden where beautiful seasonal flowers bloom. In mid-February, you’ll find Formosan cherry trees in full bloom in the garden, and numerous people visit to see the flowers. The spring azaleas are also worth a look.
Buildings that served as the homes of retainers and other servants are dotted around the area, making it a perfect place for a walk. Structures such as the Nagamatsu Residence, with an attractive thatched roof, boundary markers such as stone walls and hedges, and waterways are well preserved. One of the old folk houses was recently renovated and leased, and is now open as an accommodation facility, a cafe that is perfect for a break from walking around, and a general store. Why not take a gentle stroll around an area where a truly Japanese 300-year-old townscape still remains?
*Almost all the structures in the grounds, including the nagaya-mon gate and the storehouse, are nationally designated Important Cultural Properties. To protect these precious cultural properties, please follow the guidance and instructions from the site managers and noticeboards when you visit.
