Settlers came to Kiri and Furusato from the Sotome District in the Omura Domain. When Gaspard Yosuke of Kiri Furusato went to Nagasaki for medical treatment, he happened to meet Father Petitjean in Oura Church and then went on to lead a resurgence of Catholicism in Goto. Gaspard Yosuke, his father Paulo Zenshichi, and Michael Kiyokawa Sawajiro are commemorated on the "Pioneers of Faith Memorial" that stands at the church entrance. From the church's high vantage point, you can see the beautiful emerald green waters of the Wakamatsu Strait.
