The church's patron is Mary Magdalene.
The first generation church was consecrated in 1899 and was said to have been funded by whaling profits. In 1966, the current church was constructed in a place more conveniently close to the sea. The nearby fishing port features a statue of the Virgin Mary entitled "Our Lady of Hope". It stands looking out to sea, watching over the departing and arriving boats.
